THE WEBDESIGN GIRL / SEO SERVICES
Good design gets attention.
Good SEO helps people find it.
A beautiful website is only part of the story. I help businesses build websites that are clear to people, understandable to search engines and genuinely useful when someone arrives.
From the words on a product page to the structure behind a clinic website, search visibility begins with getting the details right.
AN INTRODUCTION TO SEO
It usually begins with a question.
Someone is sitting at their kitchen table, wondering whether it is time to renovate their home. They open Google and search for an interior designer in their area.
Across town, a parent is researching physiotherapy for their child. Somewhere else, a bride is searching for a dress, and a business owner is comparing website designers.
These people are not necessarily searching for a particular company. They are searching for an answer, a solution or someone they can trust.
SEO helps your website become part of that conversation. It makes your content easier for search engines to discover and understand, while making the experience clearer and more useful for the person reading it.
A beautifully designed website matters. But design and search visibility should work together. Explore what I do to see how website design, development and digital marketing connect.
THE FUNDAMENTALS
What actually makes a website visible?
A website that works.
Search engines need to access and understand your pages. Technical SEO covers crawlability, indexing, redirects, canonical URLs, mobile usability, site structure and performance.
Content with purpose.
Every important page should have a clear topic, useful information, descriptive headings, an appropriate title and relevant internal links.
Being found nearby.
Local SEO connects businesses with relevant geographical searches through accurate business information, useful location pages and a trustworthy local presence.
Answering better questions.
Articles, service pages, buying guides and FAQs help customers find information at different stages of their journey.
Products worth discovering.
Category pages, product descriptions, filters, images and structured data influence how an online shop is understood.
Knowing what matters.
Search Console and analytics help identify which pages attract visitors, what people search for and where improvements may help.
THE SEO KNOWLEDGE BASE / LESSON ONE
What does Google actually see?
A search result is often someone’s first introduction to your business.
The URL identifies the page address. The title tag describes its subject. The meta description provides a possible summary of the page.
Search engines may rewrite displayed titles and snippets to better match an individual query.
Try editing the fields to see how these elements work together in a simplified search-result preview.
Educational preview only. Google can choose different titles and snippets.
UNDERSTANDING A URL
A good URL tells a small story.
Consider a website address such as example.com/services/skin-treatments/. It tells a visitor that they are looking at a skin treatments page within the services section.
A useful URL is generally readable, stable and descriptive. Avoid unnecessarily complicated addresses filled with meaningless numbers, tracking parameters or repeated keywords.
Changing an existing URL is not automatically an SEO improvement. If a page has already attracted links or visitors, a poorly planned change can create broken links and lost traffic.
Appropriate redirects, updated internal links and consistent canonical signals are important when restructuring a website.
SEARCH WITH LOCATION
Sometimes the most important words are “near me”.
Imagine someone searching for a physiotherapist after moving to a new town. They do not know the local practices, so they begin with Google.
They may see a map, business profiles, reviews and websites. They compare locations, services, opening hours and the impression each business makes.
Local SEO helps businesses present accurate, consistent information and build genuinely useful location-specific content.
Google’s local ranking systems consider relevance, distance and prominence. No agency can simply buy or guarantee a top position in organic local search results.
For a clinic with several locations, each location may need its own useful page with relevant services, contact details and practical information.
What can local SEO include?
An accurate Google Business Profile, consistent contact information, relevant service categories, location pages, appropriate structured data, genuine customer reviews and clear internal linking.
For healthcare businesses, reviews and testimonials must also respect applicable professional, advertising and privacy obligations.
SEARCH DEMAND / THE CALENDAR
SEO has seasons, too.
A dress retailer may see interest grow before wedding season. An ecommerce business selling gifts may prepare for Christmas months in advance.
A medical spa may experience changes in demand around holidays or particular times of year. Educational organisations may see search interest rise around admissions and application periods.
SEO content often needs time to be discovered and evaluated. Waiting until the busiest week to create a new page may mean missing the opportunity.
Seasonal planning should be based on actual search data, business history and customer behaviour, not assumptions.
ILLUSTRATIVE SEASONAL SEARCH PATTERN
Illustrative example, not actual search-volume data. Different industries have different seasonal patterns.
HEALTHCARE & MEDICAL SEO
When someone searches for healthcare, trust comes first.
A person considering treatment may spend weeks researching. They compare clinics, read about procedures, look for qualifications and try to understand possible risks.
They are not simply choosing a product. They may be making a decision that affects their health, confidence or quality of life.
This changes how healthcare SEO should be approached.
Medical information should be accurate, responsibly written and reviewed by appropriately qualified professionals where necessary.
Credentials, transparent authorship, evidence and clear patient information can all contribute to trust.
I approach healthcare website design as a combination of usability, accessibility, discoverability and responsible communication.
Medical spas and aesthetic clinics
Medical spas often need to explain treatments that potential patients do not fully understand. Good content can clarify suitability, expected outcomes, limitations, recovery considerations and when professional consultation is necessary.
Avoid exaggerated results, unsupported claims or promises that a treatment is risk-free. Read more about website design for medical spas .
Plastic surgery
Plastic surgery content requires particular care. Procedure pages should prioritise balanced, factual information and appropriate professional review, not just search keywords.
Explore plastic surgery website design for broader design and communication considerations.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy practices may benefit from well-structured service pages, location information and clear explanations of treatment approaches, without implying that every condition has a guaranteed cure.

UK GDPR and HIPAA
SEO and data protection are different responsibilities, but they meet when a website collects patient enquiries, appointment requests or health information.
In the UK, health information is generally special-category personal data under UK GDPR. Organisations need an appropriate lawful basis, an Article 9 condition and suitable safeguards where applicable.
HIPAA is a United States framework applying to certain covered entities and business associates. It does not automatically apply to every healthcare website or every UK medical spa.
Analytics, tracking tools, online forms, consent arrangements and data handling should be assessed against the rules applicable to the organisation. SEO alone does not establish legal compliance.
ECOMMERCE SEO
A category is a destination. A product is a decision.
Imagine someone searching for a blue evening dress. They have not chosen a particular item. They want to explore a collection.
A useful category page helps them browse relevant products, understand the selection and narrow their choices.
Now imagine someone searching for a specific dress by brand and style. They may be ready to compare sizes, colours, availability, delivery details and price.
That visitor needs a strong product page.
Ecommerce SEO works best when category pages and product pages have distinct purposes instead of repeating the same descriptions everywhere.
Category SEO
Descriptive category titles, useful introductory content, logical product organisation, internal links and sensible filter handling help customers and search engines understand a collection.
Product SEO
Product pages benefit from specific names, accurate descriptions, useful images, clear availability, shipping information and relevant structured data.
What about duplicate products?
Product variations, filtering systems and multiple category paths can create several URLs with very similar content.
Canonical signals, internal linking and careful indexing decisions help manage these cases.

DIFFERENT BUSINESSES / DIFFERENT SEARCH JOURNEYS
SEO should reflect the business behind the website.
Education and academy trusts
Families, prospective employees and local communities search for different information. Clear school structures, admissions content, accessible navigation and accurate institutional information are more valuable than generic keyword pages.

Creative studios and professional services
For a design studio or consultancy, strong project pages, specialist services, useful case studies and clear positioning can help attract enquiries from clients looking for particular expertise.

IMAGES & ACCESSIBILITY
Images have a story to tell, too.
Photography is often one of the most important parts of a website. It can show a finished interior, a product detail, a clinic environment or a completed project.
But images also need thoughtful implementation. Descriptive file names, appropriate image dimensions, efficient formats and accessible alternatives can improve the experience.
What is ALT text?
Alternative text describes meaningful image content for people using assistive technologies and can also help search engines understand images.
For example, a useful description might be: “Blue velvet sofa beside a marble coffee table in a contemporary living room.”
ALT text should describe the image in context, not become a list of repeated search keywords. Decorative images may appropriately use empty ALT attributes.
Does an image file name matter?
A descriptive file name such as blue-velvet-sofa.jpg is more informative than IMG_4827.jpg.
It is a small part of good image SEO, not a substitute for useful page content.
THE SEO LIBRARY
A practical SEO knowledge base.
Essential SEO concepts explained without unnecessary jargon.
What is a meta title or title tag?
The HTML title element gives a page a concise, descriptive title. Search engines may use it when generating the clickable title in results, although they can display alternative wording. Each important page should have a relevant, distinct title that accurately reflects its content.
What is a meta description?
A meta description is a short summary placed in a page’s HTML metadata. Google may use it as the search-result snippet, but can instead select text from the page. A meta description is not a direct Google ranking factor.
What is a URL slug?
The slug is the readable part of a URL identifying a particular page. In example.com/services/seo/, the final segment, seo, is the slug. Short, descriptive slugs are generally easier for people to understand.
What are H1, H2 and H3 headings?
HTML headings organise page content into a logical hierarchy. The H1 generally identifies the main subject, while H2 and H3 headings divide the page into meaningful sections and subsections.
What is image ALT text?
ALT text provides a text alternative for an image. It should communicate meaningful visual information in context. Avoid keyword stuffing. Decorative images can use an empty ALT attribute when they add no essential information.
What is a canonical URL?
A canonical URL is the preferred URL for a page when multiple URLs contain identical or very similar content. The rel=”canonical” element provides a signal to search engines about the preferred version, but it is not an absolute command.
What is a 301 redirect?
A 301 redirect indicates that a resource has moved permanently. It is commonly used when replacing or consolidating URLs. Redirects should lead visitors to genuinely relevant destinations rather than unrelated pages.
What is indexing?
Indexing is the process through which a search engine processes and stores information about a page for potential inclusion in search results. A page being accessible does not guarantee that Google will index it.
What is crawling?
Crawling is how automated search-engine systems discover and request web pages. Internal links, XML sitemaps and a technically accessible site can help search engines discover content.
What is robots.txt?
Robots.txt is a file that provides crawling instructions for compliant web crawlers. It is not a security mechanism and does not guarantee that a URL will be excluded from search results.
What is structured data or schema markup?
Structured data provides machine-readable information about a page and its content. Depending on the page, this may include organisation, product, breadcrumb or other supported types. Correct markup can make a page eligible for certain search features, but does not guarantee a rich result.
What are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals assess aspects of real-world page experience, including loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability. They include Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift.
What is internal linking?
Internal links connect relevant pages within the same website. They help visitors explore related information and help search engines discover and understand relationships between pages. Link text should be descriptive and natural.
What is keyword intent?
Search intent is the underlying purpose behind a query. Someone searching “what is SEO” wants information, while someone searching “SEO services for medical clinics” may be comparing providers. Pages should satisfy the appropriate intent.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO focuses on helping businesses appear in relevant geographically influenced searches. Accurate business profiles, location information, useful local pages and genuine reviews can all play a role.
What is ecommerce category SEO?
Category SEO helps search engines and customers understand collections of products. Useful category pages combine descriptive headings, clear navigation, relevant products and genuinely helpful supporting information.
What is product SEO?
Product SEO concerns individual product pages. Clear product names, accurate specifications, original descriptions, appropriate images, availability information and eligible structured data can help communicate product details.
What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap lists URLs that a website owner wants search engines to discover. It can help with discovery, especially on larger sites, but does not guarantee crawling or indexing.
What is SEO cannibalisation?
Keyword cannibalisation describes situations where multiple pages compete for very similar searches without a clear distinction in purpose. The solution may involve improving page intent, consolidating content or clarifying internal links. Similar keywords alone do not always indicate a problem.
What is E-E-A-T?
E-E-A-T refers to Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness in Google’s search quality guidance. It is not a single measurable ranking score. For sensitive topics such as health, clear sourcing and trustworthy information are especially important.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions worth asking about SEO.
How long does SEO take to work?
SEO is usually a medium- to long-term process. Some technical improvements may be noticed relatively quickly, while competitive content strategies can take months to develop meaningful visibility. Results vary by website, industry and competition.
Can you guarantee first place on Google?
No reputable SEO provider can guarantee a particular organic ranking. Search results depend on many changing factors, including relevance, competition, location and Google’s systems.
Do I need SEO if my website looks beautiful?
Good design and SEO serve different purposes. A beautiful website may make an excellent impression once someone arrives, but it also needs clear content, technical accessibility and discoverable pages to attract relevant organic visitors.
Do small businesses need local SEO?
Businesses serving a town, region or defined geographical area can benefit from local SEO. The right approach depends on whether customers visit a physical location, receive services locally or use the business remotely.
Should every service have its own page?
Not necessarily. Separate pages are useful when services have distinct search intent and enough genuinely useful information to justify them. Creating many nearly identical pages solely to target keyword variations can make a website less helpful.
Do I need a blog for SEO?
A blog is not mandatory. Some businesses benefit more from improving core service and category pages. Articles are useful when they answer relevant customer questions and support the website’s wider content strategy.
Does Google use meta descriptions for ranking?
Meta descriptions are not a direct Google ranking factor. They can, however, help communicate the value of a page when Google chooses to display them in search results.
Can seasonal businesses benefit from SEO?
Yes. Seasonal businesses can plan evergreen landing pages, refresh relevant content and prepare for predictable demand. The timing should be informed by real search trends and previous performance.
Is SEO different for healthcare websites?
Healthcare content needs particular attention to accuracy, trust, professional qualifications and responsible claims. SEO should support patients in finding useful information rather than exaggerating treatment outcomes.
Does a medical spa website need HIPAA compliance?
HIPAA applies to certain US covered entities and business associates. Whether it applies depends on the organisation and its activities. A UK medical spa does not become subject to HIPAA simply because it offers aesthetic treatments. Other privacy and healthcare rules may still apply.
Does UK GDPR apply to patient enquiry forms?
UK GDPR may apply when a UK organisation processes personal data. Health-related information can be special-category data, requiring additional legal conditions and safeguards. Forms, privacy information, security and third-party integrations should be assessed appropriately.
Can patient before-and-after photos be used for SEO?
Patient photographs require careful consideration of privacy, consent, applicable advertising rules and professional obligations. Permission to take a photograph does not automatically mean it can be used publicly for marketing.
Is SEO different for WooCommerce and Shopify?
Both platforms can support strong SEO, but their URL structures, templates, apps, plugins and technical controls differ. The best approach considers the platform’s capabilities alongside the products, categories and customer search behaviour.
Should every product have a unique description?
Useful, accurate product-specific information is preferable to generic copied text. However, the priority should be genuinely helping customers, not rewriting identical specifications merely to make every sentence different.
How does SEO work for academy trusts?
Academy trust websites need clear organisational information, accessible navigation and useful content for parents, staff and communities. SEO should support accurate discovery of schools, admissions information and relevant services.
How do you measure whether SEO is working?
Useful measures can include relevant organic traffic, search impressions, clicks, conversions, enquiries, sales and engagement with important pages. Rankings alone rarely tell the complete story.
